Another career highlight! What a treat it was to shoot this Comwell Aarhus Hotel. I had been to Denmark once before, but never to Aarhus.
While my photography practice is based out of Toronto, I have been living in Germany during 2020, so Denmark was a relatively quick jaunt away. I rented a Mercedes and hopped on the Autobahn. But, as always, the pandemic made things a bit complicated. The border to Denmark closed that morning (unbeknownst to me, or the hotel), so I had to return to Hamburg and pass a 24 hour health check in order to enter the country. Unfortunately, that killed a day of shooting, which wasn’t helped by the extremely short days that far north. But we worked quickly during the five days and ended up making some great images. I was even able to sneak onto a rooftop and grab some shots of the building from afar.
The hotel is thoughtfully furnished by HAY, a lovely Danish company. It is filled with whimsy around every corner. The views of Aarhus from the guest rooms are to die for. The food at the Restaurant V was delicious, with many local brews on tap. There are bikes available to rent at the hotel, so I had a blast buzzing around the city and seeing the sights. The highlight had to be going for a November dip in the Bjarke Ingels designed Harbour Bath. Refreshing!
